Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe started in place of injured Bryce Young and completed of passes for yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. Milroe looked uncomfortable at times in the pocket, but made up for some of his throwing mistakes with 83 yards on the ground.
Running back Jahmyr Gibbs was the focus of the Alabama offense, following up his breakout game against Arkansas with a carry, yard performance. Alabama lost three fumbles in the game, two from Milroe and one from Jase McClellan, in addition for the aforementioned interception thrown by Milroe. Alabama’s defense was impressive all night, not only coming up with the game-sealing stop but providing constant pressure against King throughout the game.
The Aggies were just 5-of on third down, and King was sacked four times. Alabama will need to rid its offensive struggles next week as the Crimson Tide travels to Knoxville to take on the eighth-ranked Tennessee Volunteers and star quarterback Hendon Hooker. Young’s return would certainly help with that, but time will tell if he will be healthy enough to play.

If Young can’t go, or is limited, the expectation will be that running back Jahmyr Gibbs will lead a ground-heavy approach against the Aggies after the former Georgia Tech transfer totaled yards and two long touchdown runs in the win against the Razorbacks. It was the kind of performance that will raise the antennas of voters who haven’t paid much attention to Gibbs this season. This game was one of the most highly anticipated matchups of the year. For Gibbs to have that kind of performance considering the Tide’s offensive limitations is exactly what a running back needs to earn consideration.
Every team — even a national title contender like Alabama — is allowed one mulligan. That was what a Week 2 win over Texas was for the Tide. Saturday’s game was the golf version of a shank to the right that hit a tree, bounced off the cart path and somehow landed on the green. Bama walked away with a win, but make no mistake, it’s headed into the danger zone. What’s more problematic is that it could be doing it with Milroe, who didn’t exactly inspire confidence.
The Volunteers scored on their first four possessions in Death Valley, just one game after going an entire 60 minutes without punting vs. After all, the Aggies don’t exactly have one of the most potent offenses in the country. Tennessee does, and it plays so fast that it can turn a game sideways in a matter of minutes. Unless something miraculous happens between now and Saturday afternoon in Knoxville, Tennessee, that appears to be the case. King was named the Aggies starting quarterback in fall camp in each of the last two years, but his career hasn’t exactly gone as planned.
Against Alabama, King played well enough behind a porous offensive line. He was noticeably limping on the final drive of the game but still managed to go 5 of 9 excluding a spike for 46 yards without having a timeout in his back pocket. That’s the kind of performance that would make Jonathan Moxon of “Varsity Blues” smile.
His performance didn’t have the same Hollywood ending, but he deserves a ton of credit for leaving it all on the field on the biggest stage of his career. The Tide ripped off 13 running plays of 10 or more yards — including four of 25 or more yards — which accounted for of their rushing yards. That softened the Aggies defense up enough to give Milroe at least a little room to maneuver in the passing game and helped open some windows for him to toss his three touchdown passes.
Would Alabama have escaped with the win without those plays? Probably not. Offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien deserves a ton of credit for keeping the Aggie defense honest with a multi-dimensional rushing attack that kept the Aggies honest.
