A field trial is a simulated hunting situation where the hunting dog shows his ability to find Ruffed Grouse or American Woodcock, both of which are ground-dwelling game birds. The Scotia Barrens has a lot more to offer recreationally. As a green space close to an urban area, it offers numerous hiking, jogging, biking, and hunting opportunities.
The shooting range offers one the opportunity to work on his or her shooting ability. It is also a great place to just go for a ride to get out of town. Steel industrialist Andrew Carnegie had a great interest in the area, took a 99 year lease on about acres and purchased about more acres.
His interest in the area was focused on iron ore. He used this naturally occurring mineral to make steel in his mills in Pittsburgh. Due to the proximity of the Pennsylvania Railroad, the mine got off to a good start. The closest rail station was in Julian and the first several thousand tons of iron ore were carted over the rough roads to the rail line by mule driven carts. The road that now leads to the shooting range is actually an old railroad grade. This railroad was eventually connected to the main line of the Pennsylvania Railroad and took tons daily of Patton Township iron ore to the steel mills in Pittsburgh.
The small fires from the steam engines caused small surface fires that would burn back the vegetation from the track. Evidence of this can be seen at virtually any disused railroad grade around the state. In the Scotia Barrens, the plant types found near the road are often Pitch Pine and scrub oak.
The Pitch Pine is a fire-dependent species having serotinus cones. These cones need small hot surface fires to open up the cones and spread the seed into the soil. As a result, some of old railroad grades in the Scotia Barrens tend to look like old, overgrown farm fields populated by typical disturbance species of the area. Today, the only remains are parts of foundations and a few buildings in ruins.
At the turn of the twentieth century, however, Scotia was a bustling mining town of some people complete with a school, a church, and even a civic center that housed a small library. The town grew from humble roots into a fine place to live. Small-scale mining had taken place here since the late 18th century, but Carnegie organized a major effort to exploit the deposits in Ore was removed from a broad open pit, washed to separate it from clay, and loaded onto railcars.
The Pennsylvania Railroad had extended its Fairbrook Branch to the village in , and hauled the ore to steel mills in Pittsburgh. There was also an extensive narrow-gauge railroad in the pits to haul ore to the washer, and several artesian wells and a reservoir to supply water for ore washing.
Carnegie sold the ore deposits to the Bellefonte Furnace Company in , feeling that they were no longer economical to work and ship to Pittsburgh. Immediately after the sale, the Bellefonte Central Railroad built a new branch from Graysdale to Scotia, allowing the ore to be shipped directly to the company’s furnaces rather than take a roundabout route on the PRR.
However, mining halted in about , and all the assets of the Bellefonte Furnace Company were sold at foreclosure in There was a brief attempt to revive mining at Scotia during World War II , and the Bellefonte Central received Reconstruction Finance Corporation money to build a new branch from Alto to Scotia to serve the new facilities.
However, the mine was only briefly in operation before the cessation of hostilities , and soon ceased permanently. Not clearly marked, very confusing to navigate, picked up two full bags of trash on the trip. Great trails and terrain, but tough to navigate unless you are using the map and GPS. Lots of options to go on different trails. In general, this is a nice trail. I ran this trail and it was a pretty easy run. The trail is well cut in most areas and not too rocky.
There were some downed trees over the trail but nothing bigger than I could just step over. The trail was ok once we got to it. Went with a dog and family and had to carry the dog back to the car once the trail quickly turned to shattered glass!!
Do not come here could be dangerous. Fairly easy, couple points are steep hills but they can be avoided by choosing a different route. Easy for kids. It’s fairly easy terrain and fortunately mostly shaded.
The area is a warren of trails intersecting not all shown on the map so while it’s very difficult to follow the trail outlined on Alltrails it’s also fairly hard to get all that lost if you have a decent sense of direction or GPS, and fortunately there’s good service in this area since there will always be another trail heading the direction you want to go.
The trails are well maintained and easy to find There are a ton of paths the intersect, so when a biker and I were both trying to find our way out e were able to help each other, because I had a map the keep us going in the right direction while he was able to bike in circles quickly and figure out if where we were going wrong.
Peaceful and Tranquil trail. Interesting to see the ruins and the filled quarry is lovely. Paths can be hard to follow. Would be higher rating with more trail markings.
In early May a rather boring trail. Nothing but bare trees and bare ground between them. Only the few small lakes scattered throughout the area provided some points of interest.
