Iowa football score today. Recap: Iowa football falls to Michigan, 27-14
Spencer Petras had a so-so night where he complete 18 of his 36 passing attempts for yards but was also sacked five times. They forced two on Saturday night, including an interception at Iowa’s one-yard line by Quinn Schulte which prevented Illinois from scoring their first touchdown of the night.
Despite the Hawkeyes’ last-minute gasp, the Fighting Illini’s defense held firm and stopped them from getting into field goal range.
After forcing Illinois into a three-and-out, Spencer Petras and Co. For the first time in three games, the Hawkeyes have committed a turnover, as it comes at the worst possible moment. Trailing by three, Petras’ pass deep downfield is intercepted by Illinois defensive back Matthew Bailey.
Unless Iowa’s defense can create another turnover or force an early punt, their offense may not see the field again. After a fumble recovery for a touchdown is overturned, the Fighting Illini kick and convert on a yard field goal to take the lead late in the fourth quarter.
After a possible fumble from Sitkowski, it was returned for an yard touchdown by Riley Moss. The play is currently under review. With Illinois knocking on the door of the endzone, Iowa shuts them after an interception at the one-yard line by defensive back Quinn Schulte.
Don’t let Iowa’s offense distract you from the fact that this defense is actually unreal. Quinn Schulte erases a scoring opportunity with an interception and it’s still tied with left in regulation. Showing that they are more than just a run team, the Fighting Illini have made their way into the red zone after multiple flashy receptions. The latest was a yard pass from Sitkowski to his wide receiver Jonah Morris that was taken all the way to Iowa’s eight-yard line.
The Hawkeyes had their best rushing performance of the night on the drive, gaining 50 yards, but they could not do anything with it. A screen pass from Petras to LaPorta lost eight yards to make it third and long.
After an incompletion, the team again had punt. However, the Hawkeyes look to have a chance to change that as they are currently at Illinois’ yard line.
After giving Iowa a heavy dose of Chase Brown, Illinois turned to the passing games in hopes of gaining more chunk plays. Instead, a pass on 3rd and five goes five yards in the wrong direction, leading to Illinois having to punt. On a positive note, the Hawkeyes managed to get two first downs on the drive after key completions to LaPorta and Ragaini consecutively.
Unfortunately for them, they were unable to do much more than that, leading to another punt from Tory Taylor. Silver lining on that last Iowa drive: Flipped field position, Illinois is pinned inside its own yard line.
The way Iowa’s defense has played, they should have good field position on the next offensive possession. Following Iowa’s punt, Illinois was slated to start their drive at their own yard line, which has been their best field position of the night to this point.
However, just as they have done for much of the night, the Hawkeyes’ stingy defense did not let them do anything with it, forcing another three and out. First, they were called for a facemask penalty that turned 1st and 10 to 1st and Then on 3rd and long, Petras was sacked for the first time, this time by Illinois’ Seth Coleman. Artur Sitkowski remains the quarterback for Fighting Illinois to start the second quarter.
However, he is unable to generate much offense. Aside from a five-yard reception by Chase Brown to begin the drive, Illinois is unable to move the ball, forcing them to punt. Spencer Petras is sacked for the third time tonight as the Hawkeyes’ offense goes nowhere to kick off the third quarter.
A missed yard field goal by Iowa kicker Drew Stevens caps off what was a promising final drive for the Hawkeyes. Iowa is unable to capitalize on the great field position as penalties and wasted plays cost them. Maybe we were overwhelmed talent-wise or maybe our guys are that sloppy.
It didn’t feel that way from the sideline. It is what it is. But it impacted the game, and we weren’t good enough to overcome that. Here is what Ferentz said when asked what he saw out of Johnson, especially because the stats might not have been as good as they could’ve been because of the penalties. You’re exactly right. That’s just kind of what I’m trying to articulate is that when yards are taken off the board or negative yardage plays are thrown on, it kind of skews things a little bit.
The Hawkeyes go 75 yards on seven plays in just over a minute, and Luke Lachey scores a second touchdown for Iowa. But with eight seconds left on the clock, it was too late for the Hawkeyes to stage a comeback.
Blake Corum runs 20 yards for another Michigan touchdown. Extra point is good and Iowa will get the ball back with remaining in this game. The Hawkeyes defense forced Michigan to go three and out, putting the ball back in Iowa’s hands with enough time to score some more points.
Instead, Petras was sacked twice and faced a quarterback hurry once. Iowa went for it on fourth down and Petras’ pass fell incomplete. Michigan took over on the yard line. But the Hawkeyes couldn’t get in the end zone.
Iowa decided to pass on 4th and 2, which fell incomplete. On top of that, Iowa’s Arland Bruce was called for offensive pass interference. Michigan declined and took over possession on the 5-yard line. Iowa’s defense continued the momentum from the Hawkeyes first touchdown of the game into the next play. Michigan’s Blake Corum attempted to run the ball on 3rd and 1, and Iowa’s defense stopped him for a loss of one.
Michigan punted on 4th and 2, and Iowa takes over on the yard line. Iowa starts the fourth quarter with a touchdown. Kaleb Johnson runs for a two-yard touchdown and the point after is good. The Hawkeyes trail Michigan, On the last play of the third quarter, Spencer Petras completed a yard pass to Nico Ragaini.
Iowa will start the final quarter from the two-yard line, with a chance to score the Hawkeyes first points of the game. After a forced fumble on a sack by Deontae Craig, Michigan was forced to punt. Brad Robbins did send the ball 36 yards, but Iowa will have great field position, taking over on the yard line. Here’s how the last drive went for the Hawkeyes: A positive yard gain on the ground by Kaleb Johnson, followed by another two yard run.
And then things went downhill. A personal foul called on Nico Ragaini sent Iowa back 15 yards. Then Spencer Petras sent a near interception. Michigan ended the drive by sacking Petras for a loss of eight. The Wolverines have the ball on the yard line after a yard penalty for an illegal block on Michigan. McCarthy converted a bad snap on third and seven into a yard touchdown pass.
Some boos from the crowd as the replay appeared to show that he was past the line of scrimmage, but touchdown stands and extra points is good. Michigan chews up on the drive. Iowa started with the ball in the third quarter, but it didn’t last long.
Spencer Petras was sacked on the first play of the second half for a loss of nine, and the Hawkeyes couldn’t convert after. Tory Taylor punted for 43 yards. Despite some solid plays on offense for Iowa and a big stop by the defense late in the second quarter, the Hawkeyes head to the locker room without any points on the scoreboard. Iowa will receive to start the second half.
Iowa’s defense stepped up big time — aided by a delay of game call against Michigan — and held the Wolverines to a field goal in the final thirty seconds of the first half. Touchback on the kick, and the Hawkeyes take over on the yard line with less than ten seconds to play in the second quarter. The Hawkeyes can’t convert on third down, after Gavin Williams was tackled for a loss of four. Tory Taylor’s punt goes 51 yards and Michigan takes over from the yard line.
