Fredmann, who had danced all over the world, came to Denver after directing the Tampa Ballet. National recognition came from Martha Graham, the first lady of ballet, who had commissioned Aaron Copland to write the ballet Appalachian Spring.
She allowed Denver to be one of the first companies outside New York to produce it in Despite its growing reputation, Colorado Ballet performed during these years in the aging Municipal Auditorium, a multipurpose space it shared with professional wrestling. He was lured to Colorado partly because of its grand new home in the Ellie Caulkins Opera House—a vastly overhauled version of the old Auditorium Theater.
The Ellie hosts more than fifty ballet performances during the October-to-March season. The academy trains more than advanced students using the Vaganova method, which produced such dancers as Mikhail Baryshnikov and Rudolph Nureyev. The company also offers student matinees, in-school assemblies, sensory tours for the visually impaired, and a touring school show. Dance Renaissance, another effort to reach youngsters, is an after-school program for elementary schools in low-income neighborhoods.
A great performance! Beautiful dancing, music, and set. The Colorado Ballet once again put on a wonderful production. Went to see the Nutcracker! I took my 60 yr. Parking garage was packed, but luckily we got a spot. The hot cocoa was delicious, especially with a little Bailey’s shooter! We really enjoyed our seats, which were on the right side of the stage on the lower level towards the back. I’m not sure any seat in the place is too bad, unless you have an obstruction in the way.

The soloists as well as the corps de ballet presented an outstanding performance that mesmerized every attendee and garnered rousing, applause and a standing ovation at its conclusion. My wife and daughter saw Alice in Wonderland as well, and they loved it. Be courteous and be seated on time. My daughter and I have made it an annual ritual to see The Nutcracker. Even before she was born, I enjoyed seeing The Nutcracker performed during the holidays.
While my daughter enjoyed the Colorado Ballet’s and performances of The Nutcracker, she is always filled with wonder at the dancing and colors presented, I can’t help but feel they could do better. I can’t judge them on technical merit as I’m no expert , but I do think the presentation is gorgeous, and costumes are beautiful and vibrant!
However, having seen the same ballet performed in London and New York, I know it can be better. That said, I’m not sure its a fair comparison on my part? I’ve had seats at the front and in the balcony, and regardless of where I’ve sat, acoustics and view have been pretty good.
I also love that they provide booster seats for the kids and that they keep some really clean bathrooms! And perhaps their best asset? The great ushers and friendly staff we’ve always encountered at each of the performances we’ve taken in over the past 3 years.
