Still a tie game pic. This sequence was ultimately the closest either team got to the end zone to close the half, as Michigan was unable to convert a fourth-and-two and the Hoosiers ran out of clock.
Halftime gave the Wolverines time to adjust not just schematically, but emotionally as well. The message was heard loud and clear, as on their opening drive of the second half what looked to be a three-and-out from the endzone became a yard march of a drive that was capped with a yard toss to Cornelius Johnson for a touchdown. After an easy three-and-out was followed up by a sizeable punt return by A.
J Henning, it seemed the woes of the first half were behind Michigan. Indiana had other plans. McCarthy’s first interception of the season pic. With the lead still only at one score however, the offense needed a drive to pad the lead. Enter Luke Schoonmaker. With a pair of tremendous catches, the senior tight end finally pushed the lead to a comfortable one for Michigan, and from there the game seemed settled. On the day, J. I’ve long been on the record that I do not believe Michigan is going to fire coach Jim Harbaugh. Certainly not in a season like this one, in which the program has had to navigate its way through the COVID pandemic.
Still, at no point was I under the impression that Michigan would be losing to rival Michigan State and follow that up with its first loss to Indiana since Even so, while there’s been plenty of talk about Harbaugh’s future at Michigan, most of the talk about Harbaugh being on the hot seat has come from outside the program. Maybe that will change following this loss or maybe it won’t.
But the talk is only going to grow louder, and at some point, the Wolverines may begin listening. As I said, I don’t think Harbaugh is in danger of being fired. I can’t say the same about defensive coordinator Don Brown. Brown came to Michigan from Boston College in , Harbaugh’s second season.
He replaced D. Durkin, who had left to take the top job at Maryland. Since coming to Ann Arbor, Brown’s defenses have been some of the best in the country on an annual basis, but they continually came up short in Michigan’s biggest games, usually against Ohio State. Now in , it looks like Michigan’s defense is playing Ohio State every week. Michigan State was completing deep passes or drawing flags on Michigan’s DBs.
Saturday against Indiana was an encore performance. The Wolverines weren’t able to generate consistent pressure on Penix, and time and again, he found open receivers or drew pass interference calls on Michigan with deep throws. Indiana also drew Michigan offsides numerous times to add insult to injury, as it was clear Michigan was trying to get a head start on the snap to make up for its lack of a pass-rush.
It was a sloppy performance all around for the Wolverines defense. It’s going to get lost in the shuffle of the Michigan situation, and no disrespect for that, but Indiana might be pretty good!
It deserve credits! There was the season-opening win over Penn State that could have been written off as something of a fluke victory considering how heavily the box score tilted Penn State’s way, but it counted as a win in the standings all the same. Then last week, IU beat Rutgers, but you’re never going to get a lot of credit for beating Rutgers. But how about beating Michigan and Penn State in the same season? And doing so convincingly against the Wolverines! Prepare yourselves for an Indiana team that might find itself ranked in the top 10 when the new top 25 rankings come out on Sunday afternoon.
We’re only three weeks into a shortened Big Ten season, and with both Penn State and Michigan sitting on two losses, Indiana has itself set up as Ohio State’s primary competition for the Big Ten East division crown.
What a time to be alive.

The crown jewel of the drive came from — who else — Blake Corum, who managed to make no less than four Hoosier defenders miss en route to a yard run that set up the first points of the game. Down at the 1 for UMichFootball pic. While their own first drive was less successful, the Hoosiers eventually responded on their second drive.
After a pass interference call on 3rd and 1 gave a fresh set of downs, quarterback Connor Bazelak made a pair of back-footed throws to find the end zone and tie the score at Shortly after the following kickoff, a frightening situation developed as run game coordinator Mike Hart collapsed on the field, necessitating a delay of the game as he was tended to by medical personnel. Per Michigan color commentator Jon Jansen, Hart was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.
Despite gaining 47 yards in four plays, Michigan was stymied on the far end of the red zone, resulting in a yard field goal from Jake Moody. Indiana would be forced to settle for a field goal, once again evening the score. From there, the rest of the first half could, at best, be described as an absolute quagmire. But Saturday was far from normal. IndianaFootball keeps things level!
The resulting drive for Indiana felt like a mirror version of what was just seen — the Hoosiers drove down the field, got within 10 yards of the end zone, and decided to attempt a field goal. Now UMichFootball blocks Indiana’s field goal!
Still a tie game pic.
