The Washington Huskies football team represents the University of Washington in college football. Husky Stadium , located on campus, has served as the home field for Washington since Washington has won 17 conference championships, seven Rose Bowls , and claims two national championships recognized by NCAA-designated major selectors. Washington is one of four charter members of what became the Pac Conference and, along with California , is one of only two schools with uninterrupted membership.
Ten different men served as Washington head coaches during the first 18 seasons. While still an independent, the team progressed from playing 1 to 2 games per season to 10 matches per season as the sport grew in popularity. The school initially used a variety of locations for its home field. Home attendance grew from a few hundred to a few thousand per home game, with on-campus Denny Field becoming home from onward. The team played in-state rival Washington State College to a 5—5 tie, in the first game in the annual contest later known as the Apple Cup.
Dobie coached for nine remarkable seasons at Washington, posting a 58—0—3 record. In Dobie’s final season at Washington, his team won the PCC’s inaugural conference championship. Dobie was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in as a charter member. Following Dobie’s tenure, Washington turned to a succession of coaches with mixed results. Claude J.
Hunt , went a cumulative 6—3—1 highlighted by the school’s second PCC championship in , [12] Tony Savage 1—1, and Stub Allison 1—5. This era concluded with the team’s move from Denny Field to its permanent home field of Husky Stadium in Washington athletics adopted the initial nickname of Sun Dodgers in used until , before becoming the Huskies from onward. Enoch Bagshaw graduated from Washington in as the school’s first five-year letterman in football history. After leading Everett High School from to , including consecutive national championships in and , Bagshaw returned to Washington as the first former player turned head coach in , [14] ultimately overseeing the program’s second period of sustained success.
Bagshaw’s tenure was marked by 63—22—6 record and the school’s first two Rose Bowl berths, resulting in a 14—14 tie against Navy in the Rose Bowl and a 19—20 loss to Alabama in the Rose Bowl. His team won the school’s third PCC championship. Bagshaw left the program after his team had a losing season, only the second such season in his tenure. Bagshaw died the following year at the age of James Phelan succeeded Bagshaw for the season.
The Notre Dame graduate guided the Huskies to a 65—37—8 record over 12 seasons. Phelan guided the Huskies to their first bowl game victory, beating Hawaii 53—13 in the Poi Bowl. In later years, he became the first former Husky head coach to take the same role in professional football.
Phelan was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in Following Phelan, Washington fielded a succession of teams under four coaches without either great success, or failure. Washington participated in one bowl game and tallied no conference championships during this period with an overall record of 65—68—7. Ralph Welch played at Purdue under head coach James Phelan , whom he followed to Washington to become an assistant coach in In , Welch was promoted to succeed Phelan as Washington’s head coach and served until , compiling a record of 27—20—3.
World War II limited both the and seasons of the PCC, reducing team participation from ten team down to just four. Welch’s first five teams all fielded winning records, but final team did not. Howard Odell joined Washington in from Yale. In his five seasons from to , he compiled a record of 23—25—2 with two winning seasons.
John Cherberg , a Washington player and then assistant from to , became head coach in He compiled a 10—18—2 record from to , before being removed due to a payoff scandal. Darrell Royal was retained and led the team to a 5—5 record, before leaving to coach at Texas where he won three national championships, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in , and had the school’s football stadium renamed in his honor as Darrell K Royal—Texas Memorial Stadium. After a pair of unremarkable initial seasons, Owens led his , , and teams to three AAWU championships and associated Rose Bowl berths: a Rose Bowl 44—8 win over Wisconsin , a Rose Bowl 17—7 win over Minnesota , and a 7—17 loss to Illinois in the Rose Bowl.
The Helms Athletic Foundation named the team the national champions, the school’s first such title in football. Owens’ later teams would never match this level of success, partly owing to a conference prevention of a second bowl team representative until Owens concurrently served as the athletic director at Washington from to Owens resigned as head coach of the Huskies following the season, as the Pac-8’s third winningest coach of all-time.
Don James came to Washington from Kent State. His dominating Washington Huskies finished a perfect season and shared the national championship with Miami. The Huskies won 22 consecutive games from — James’ record with the Huskies was —57—2. Sports columnists and football experts have recognized the Washington Huskies among the top 10 college football teams of all time. During the season, it was revealed that several of James’ players received improper benefits from boosters.
Although James and his staff were not personally implicated in any violation, James resigned on August 22, in protest of the harsh sanctions the Pac imposed on top of the NCAA’s sanctions against his team.
Though then University President William Gerberding and then Athletic Director Barbara Hedges had presented James the final list of penalties that all Pac parties had agreed best for the football program and athletics, Gerberding argued in favor of altering the penalties against the program from a two-year TV revenue ban and one-year bowl ban, to a one-year TV revenue ban and two-year bowl ban.
In a interview with columnist Blaine Newnham of The Seattle Times , Don James said his resignation from head coaching “probably saved his life”. Don James died on October 20, , at the age of Jim Lambright was promoted from defensive coordinator to head coach following the sudden resignation by Don James. Lambright led the Huskies to four bowl appearances in his six seasons. Despite these bowl appearances and a 44—25—1 overall record, Lambright was fired by athletic director Barbara Hedges following the season after going 6—6.
Rick Neuheisel was hired away from Colorado to take over as the Huskies’ head football coach. During his tenure, the Huskies went 33—16, highlighted by a victory in the Rose Bowl over Purdue. Neuheisel also led the Huskies to two berths in the Holiday Bowl and to the Sun Bowl during his four-year tenure. In , Neuheisel inspired his underperforming Huskies to win the inaugural ” Northwest Championship ” by sweeping their Pacific Northwest rivals. Neuheisel was reprimanded by the NCAA for numerous recruiting violations.
Neuheisel was fired in June after he admitted to taking part in a calcutta pool for the Men’s NCAA basketball tournament. Keith Gilbertson was promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach following Neuheisel’s termination.
The season, Gilbertson’s first, ended with a 6—6 record but no bowl appearance. A 1—10 record the next year resulted in his firing. In two seasons, Gilbertson’s record was 7— Former Stanford and Notre Dame head coach Tyrone Willingham was hired as the next head football coach of the Washington Huskies in order to clean up the program’s off-the-field reputation. The Huskies failed to post a winning record in any of Willingham’s four seasons, the best being 5—7 in Willingham’s record at Washington was a dismal 11— USC offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian was named the 23rd head football coach at Washington following the firing of Willingham.
Sarkisian, known as an offensive mind and quarterbacks coach, led the Huskies to a 34—29 record over five seasons, never winning more than eight games in a year but recording just one losing season. Washington hired Chris Petersen as head football coach on December 6, Washington finished the season with an invitation to participate in the Fiesta Bowl.
In the season , Petersen led the Huskies to their second Pac title in three years and Washington’s 15th Rose Bowl appearance. On December 2, , Petersen announced he would step down as head coach and move into an advisory role. Defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake was named Petersen’s successor following his departure. During the season , Lake was suspended without pay for shoving a Washington player during a loss to Oregon.
Lake was later fired, finishing his tenure with a record. Defensive coordinator Bob Gregory served as interim coach for the final three games of the season. Washington hired Kalen DeBoer as head football coach on November 29, Washington played its first 26 seasons of college football from to as an independent. In , Washington became one of the four charter members of the Pacific Coast Conference PCC , which later evolved into the modern day Pac Conference after going through several iterations: the PCC — , Athletic Association of Western Universities — , Pacific-8 — , Pacific — , and Pac —present.
The Pac claims the history of each of these preceding conferences as its own. Washington football teams have been named national champions four times by NCAA-designated “major selectors”. Washington claims both the and championships.
Washington’s only consensus national championship was in , when the team finished No. The team took an improbable road to the Rose Bowl and national championship. After suffering a 1-point setback to Navy in the third week of the season, the team reeled off eight straight wins capped by a triumph over No. Because the final Associated Press and United Press International polls were conducted after the final game of the regular season, their Rose Bowl opponent Minnesota had already been named the AP and UPI national champion for prior to the game.
In its poll conducted following the bowl games, the Football Writers Association of America recognized Ole Miss as its national champion. The team opened the college football season with a 9—0 record which included a 20—11 win at No. While ranked No. The Huskies instead were invited to play in the Orange Bowl against the No. The game is famous for the Sooner Schooner incident.
After Oklahoma kicked a field goal to take a 17—14 lead in the fourth quarter, a penalty was called on the Sooners that nullified the play. The Sooner Schooner driver, who didn’t see the flag, drove the wagon on the field and was immediately flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The ensuing field goal attempt was blocked and led a momentum shift that saw Washington score two touchdowns in less than a minute en route to a 28—17 victory. In winning, the Huskies became the first team from the Pac to play in and win the Orange Bowl.

As expected, Larsen has been activated from PUP list and will have a chance to make his season debut in Week 5 against Titans after missing the first four games of the season due to an Achilles injury.
With Chase Roullier knee and Wes Schweitzer concussion on injured reserve, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Larsen overtake Nick Martin as the starting center. Eifler hamstring was placed on Washington’s injured reserve list Saturday. Eifler exited the Week 4 matchup against the Cowboys after suffering a hamstring injury. The second-year linebacker has logged one tackle to date this season and his absence will likely impact the team’s special-teams depth. On the surface, Robinson’s availability likely doesn’t matter much to McKissic’s usage, as the pass-catching back has thrived over recent weeks to the tune of 19 receptions.
However, it’s possible the rookie Robinson could completely take over the between-the-tackles carries, which would in turn bump Antonio Gibson out of the aforementioned role. The Commanders have teased using Gibson, the converted receiver, as more of a pass catcher in their offense over the years, most recently targeting Gibson eight times in Week 1 resulting in seven receptions for 72 yards.
While McKissic’s role has seemingly never been threatened during his tenure with Washington, it’s also true that Gibson has previously always had a place as a ball carrier. Fantasy managers should stay tuned to how the backfield plays out with Robinson now on the active roster. This isn’t a particularly good sign for Gibson’s fantasy managers, as Robinson had already been declared the starting running back during the preseason before he sustained gunshot wounds in his right leg that necessitated surgery.
While Gibson put together a complete Week 1 performance, his playing time has taken a precipitous fall since with two straight games seeing less than 50 percent of the offensive snaps. Given the three-year starter has been used almost exclusively as a between-the-tackles ball carrier over the last two weeks, a role in which Robinson could completely take over once healthy, it’s unclear how the Commanders plan to utilize Gibson.
Complicating matters further, No. The Commanders designated Robinson to return to practice earlier this week, setting the stage for Saturday’s announcement. The rookie had allegedly earned the starting nod during the preseason prior to sustaining gunshot wounds in his right leg, which required surgery. Through the first four games of the season, both Antonio Gibson and J. McKissic have seen work as pass catchers, with the latter registering 19 receptions thus far in It seems likely the Commanders could ease Robinson back into the running back rotation, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the year-old eventually take over as the two-down back with McKissic operating as the obvious pass catcher.
That could leave Gibson completely out of the rotation, particularly since the Commanders have been relying on nominal No. Cosmi suffered a right thumb injury in Sunday’s loss to the Cowboys, and he’ll now be sidelined indefinitely after he underwent surgery Wednesday.
While the 6-foot-6, pounder remains out, Cornelius Lucas will likely step in at right tackle for Washington. Eifler suffered a hamstring injury in Sunday’s loss to the Cowboys, and he’s failed to practice since. The year-old linebacker has just one tackle through the team’s first four games, so his absence likely won’t affect Washington’s defensive scheme for Sunday’s contest against the Titans.
Eifler’s next opportunity to play comes Thursday night in Chicago. Butler came away from Sunday’s loss to the Cowboys with an apparent quadriceps injury, and he’s failed to practice since. The rookie safety has played mostly special-teams snaps through the team’s first four contests, and he’ll now target a return for next Thursday night’s game in Chicago.
The timing is suboptimal with Washington set to play two games in a span of five days, facing the Bears on Thursday Night Football after Sunday’s tilt with the Titans. Thomas is expected to be a game-time decision ahead of the p. ET kickoff this Sunday, with John Bates next up for snaps and targets at tight end, though the Commanders also might give Armani Rogers a look in obvious passing situations. Thomas is fifth on the team with 20 targets this year, averaging 3. Rookie wideout Jahan Dotson hamstring is ruled out, and while he hasn’t seen many targets overall, his surprising dominance of Carson Wentz’s TD passes four out of eight is part of the reason Samuel and Terry McLaurin have only three combined TDs from combined total yards.
Both Samuel and McLaurin get favorable individual matchups this week against a shaky group of cornerbacks, but Tennessee’s interior pass rush and talented safeties could spell trouble for QB Carson Wentz and his banged-up offensive line. Samuel got at least nine targets and one carry in each of Washington’s first three games, before sinking to seven targets and no carries in the loss to Dallas last week. Dyami Brown replaced Dotson after the rookie injured his hamstring in the Week 4 loss to Dallas.
The Commanders could turn to either Brown or Cam Sims this Sunday, and there’s a decent chance they’ll need a replacement again Week 6 when they face the Bears on Thursday Night Football. FedEx Field.
