But Clayton was not the first one to see the buck on that particular day. He had spent that morning sitting in a different blind with his year-old brother, Lee, for the morning hunt. They shot a few coyotes but no deer. Meanwhile, Clayton’s dad and year-old sister, Carly, were sitting in a different blind located in another area of the property. She shot a nice buck later that day so I decided to sit in that box blind with her that evening. Clayton and his family have hunted the property, which is owned by relatives, for many years and had shot some nice bucks there.
After Carly killed her buck, they took it several miles away to field-dress it, hoping to keep the area fresh for the evening hunt. The evening proved to be cold and windy with snow driven by 35 mph winds to accompany below-zero temperatures.
My first shot took it through both shoulders, and I actually think my second shot hit it on the way to the ground. Then I looked back and saw Carly yards away coming behind me, so I went back and got her. Three people scored the buck, all reaching scores within a half-inch of as a non-typical.
